#1 Belilena Cave in Kitulgala

Evidence of prehistoric human presence as early as 32,000 years ago was recorded on this site; Kitulgala Belilena is well-known as the largest prehistoric cave in Sri Lanka. This Huge Cave has been home to the prehistoric ‘Balangoda Man’ (Homo sapiens balangodensis), where 16,000-year-old skeletal remains have been found.

The Cave Located 8km away from Kitulgala town. You can reach to cave hire by tuk-tuk, 45 minutes drive from Kitulgala town, and just a 15-minute trekking path. Another way you can start trekking from the plantation hotel, you can reach caves within half an hour through the rainforest.

It recommended you wear long pants and closed shoes to avoid getting thorny burns and insect bites. It’ll be a good idea for you to bring some salt to avoid leeches, mosquito repellent, and rain gear.
